Kpopalypse roundup – new k-pop releases 21/1/2019

It’s time once again for Kpopalypse roundup!  Let’s check out this week’s new releases!

Did you know that Stellar have never been used as a roundup header image until now? I’m not 100% sure if that’s true but it probably is, unless for some reason it isn’t.

Gfriend – Sunrise

Gfriend do “Time For The Moon Night” again because why the hell not.

Huta – Ya

Ya, na.

Astro – All Night

It’s that slow boring shit everyone is doing now.

ATEEZ – Say My Name

Better than expected actually, gets better as it goes on with some cool vocoder stuff at the end.

Hyomin – U Um U Um

Starts off pretty much like “Mango” part 2 but actually improves quite a bit as it gets going, which is just as well because having Hyomin really high up on my worst list for two years in a row would probably have cost me a few friends hahaha.

Dreamcatcher – Over The Sky

What’s the bet that the next Dreamcatcher song that actually comes with a music video isn’t as good as this oddly MV-less single.  I guess there’s a fake leather shortage or something.

Favorite – Loca

Favourite have ironically decided that actually being a favourite is too much career pressure so they’ve just high-tailed it over to that shit Latin sound that everyone else stopped doing six months ago.

Punch – Heart

Not much of a song but the video is an exciting study in how much BB cream can be applied to a person’s face without restricting breathing.

Nature – Dream About U

Nature have saved k-pop, you probably didn’t even know that this came out, so you’re welcome.

Bang Yongguk – Hikikomori

It’s enough to make you want to lock yourself in your room and watch crappy anime.

LU:KUS – Faker

It’s nice of this group to sit down and write a touching love song so Faker feels better about losing in the League Of Legends 2017 finals.

Lena & Jack Walton – We Need A Change

We certainly do.

Jerastar – By My Side

Yeah don’t get your hopes up, this is just the usual ultra-average bullshit everybody does.

Mckdaddy – Issue

What’s he doing in Kim Lip’s building?  Get outta there with your stupid yolorap, Blockberry need it back to launch a missile or something.

Blooming – My Life

Well it kind of rocks, a little, so that’s something, but they could have used a bit more sustain on the guitars.  Hearing them peter out to nothing after doing each one of those big chords is just kinda sad.

YodaYoung – One Side Love

One of the most deliberately ugly music videos I’ve ever seen.  Or maybe they thought that this actually looked good, but that’s hard to imagine.

BONUS RANDOM VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Loona Odd Eye Circle’s “Sweet Crazy Love” but it’s made with Loona TV noises

It’s actually an annoying listen and it’s easy enough to electronically repitch voices, but the editing skills are still on point.  I highly recommend that you link this to people who are annoyed by Loona for whatever dumb reason, so they become even more annoyed.

That’s all for this week’s roundup!  Kpopalypse shall return!

  1. Kpopalypse, I’m insecure (as I’m sure you’ve already noticed from my previous comments) and I’m suffering from Kpopalypse Nugu Alert withdrawal. Will there be a new episode coming in February?

P.S. My best friend, who isn’t even a K-pop fan, also loves your Nugu Alerts.

  2. Wow! Nature’s song is like a candidate for Top 5 of Kpopalypse Favorite List 2019. It reminds me so much of Apink’s songs, but it’s like they are crafted by better songwriters. It’s like Elris debut song in 2017.

  3. Nature’s song reminds me of April’s Dream Candy. I’m not really sure if I like it, but it’s not a bad song.

  4. For me, Over The Sky is better than all of Dreamcatcher’s 2018 title tracks. It has this feeling of “badass but not too dark and serious”, present in older songs like Good Night and Chase Me, but seems to be missing in later ones starting from Full Moon (until this one).

  5. i got excited for stellar comeback

then I remembered that dream got lowered into the earth beneath a somber crowd of stellar fans almost a year ago.

  6. I wanted to like GFriend’s Sunrise since I liked TFTMN and it sounds so similar, but now I can’t stop playing OutKast’s “Hey Ya!” whenever that chorus hits.

  7. Nature’s song is basically newly reworked version of April’s Dream Candy lmao, but it’s as great as Dream Candy tho
