Many k-pop fans are excited about the potential shown by Red Velvet, SM’s newest girl group.  Many of them are also very confused, and have been asking Kpopalypse the following question:

I’m not just making this shit up, by the way.  People really are confused by this shit.  A simple Google search while researching this topic revealed that the general k-pop fan population is confused as a motherfuck about which Red Velvet member is which at any given moment.

As you can see by the last result, there’s speculation that the Red Velvet members may have gotten prettier, and that this may be the cause of the confusion.  If you’re someone struggling to become a k-pop idol and you’re looking at your options for becoming prettier, you basically have two choices:

  1. Get famous, then become prettier while you are under the public eye, with all the gossip and scrutiny this entails
  2. Get prettier during your training period when you are safely locked in the dungeon and cameras aren’t looking at you

It makes sense to choose the second option, however it could also be the case that SM Entertainment just scouted for a bunch of girls with the same look in the first place.  Either way, there’s no doubting that the girls in Red Velvet do look strikingly similar, for whatever reason.

  1. For a minute, I thought, at least 2 are shorter than the other 2, but with heels, lifts, and photo position, that’s not a hard & fast rule…

  4. I can’t believe i got all of these right I’m quite proud of myself.

    When the automatic performance was broadcast (Q9 pic) I couldn’t tell who was who but now this just shows how much time I’ve been spending on twitter with constant RV pics and trivia being posted on my timeline. (Irene and Seulgi have known eachother 6 years apparently, I’ve noticed they’re always standing close together or linking arms which helps with identification.)

  5. I can usually tell Joy and Seulgi apart from the others when they’re not heavily photoshopped: Joy is the tallest and her eyes are quite far apart, and Seulgi is the only one with monolids. If I recognize Irene, it’s only by process of elimination, and I almost never recognize her on her own, because she doesn’t seem to have any distinguishing features at all. How is it possible for a human being to look so…generic?

    In the photo with beige jackets, it’s (L-R) Joy, Irene, Seulgi, Wendy. And the airport photo is fucking terrifying.

  8. Ugh, I’ve been into k-pop for a year, I can tell the Tasty twins apart, but still can’t distinguish more than about six women, and one of them’s Amber. As well-versed as I get in the anthropological rationale, I’m still utterly perplexed at my complete ineptitude in the most basic faculty of looking at people.

  9. I honestly didn’t even try and Ive been able to tell them apart even after they all dyed their hair the same color. You think that maybe after all these years of telling kpop group members apart all these kpop fans would have this already mastered.
